About tambura

Tambura/Tamburitza is folk plucking instrument. The first mentioned tambura is Asirian tambura and it originates from BC. The picture of a long-necked instrument lies carved into the stone from 3rd century. The name of this instrument derives from the Persian word t-n, which means a string. The oldest preserved written document about the existence of tambura is an account of travels written by N.Nicolajeu, an attendant of the French consul in Turkey, which dates from the year of 1515 in Bosnia and Serbia. Later on, tambura spread throughout Slavonia, Vojvodina, Kosovo and Metohija, and a part of southern Hungary.
